The importance of community in the workplace

I have written two vignettes for the coming weeks and they will have to wait because I need to thank my wonderful cohorts at Four Season Nursery. Our group truly represent a human community much like the tree community written a few weeks ago. We all have separate lives away from work but our love for each other and for plants bring us together every day. What is most special is how each of us move to help each other with customer’s needs.

Sometimes it’s helping to load bags of mulch or compost, getting a trailer or pick-up filled with mulch, tying up a plant and wrapping to protect foliage on its journey to your home. We are all working for a common goal and that’s the essence of community, helping each other. I really felt that the other day when it seemed I spent most of the day ‘packaging plants’ to be sent to their new homes…your yard. Suddenly someone from the staff would come to help tie up, bring the twine, burlap, or air tarp to help me get that plant in your vehicle.

Yes, the nursery is a nice place to visit for its beauty, but what makes it special is the staff that we have to help customers enjoy their visit, make a purchase knowing we all want that purchase to make it to your home happy.

I am blessed to have not only a beautiful location, my wife and a staff that truly love what they do. That is community and the world needs more of it.
