Ending thoughts for 2025 season. So many good.
We were blindsided this spring when we learned of two new Morgan Composting dealers in our neck of the woods. Morgan’s are the only compost products we sell and it’s been that way for 20 + years. We have stayed loyal because we believe in their products. As you can imagine Jeri and I were quite flummoxed – best word I could think of to explain our feelings. So how were sales this season? Well, we had the best sales of Morgan product ever. All is good. Thank you all for using their products in your gardens and I hope you had a successful year.
Plant sales were very strong with many first-time gardeners coming to the nursery. What has been so rewarding is seeing young gardeners finding our nursery. The staff get excited helping to answer their questions and having them getting interested in plants, many with a first home and many wanting to go native. We really like that sentiment and we let them know there are non-natives that add tons of interest in the garden and bring in pollinators also. It really helps them widen the plant palette when including some non-natives to their landscape.
Usually starting in August, we get gardeners asking about any late season sales. I’m not going to sell a healthy plant for a discount just because it’s late in the season. Every autumn Tom, Earl and I go through the nursery and take the time to prune the inventory before putting it away for the winter. Yes, it takes time, however, in the spring when they awake from their winter slumber, we give them all a little slow-release fertilizer and they are ready to go. As mentioned in an earlier journal entry we started our Second Chance $ales area this year. It did very well. This won’t be a fall thing. We will now have a sale on plants all season, adding misfits that don’t have good retail appeal but given a good home, removed from the pot, with a little good compost will be just fine. I have taken countless misfits, given them love and they have thrived and many are in our nursery gardens.
In summary, our compost sales were up, plant sales as well. We now have a plant sale all season. I go to the nursery at least twice a week during the winter and seeing it in its quiet state brings an inner smile. It’s resting yet still beautiful. I love the hectic scene during the season. There is so much energy and our staff thrive in that environment, but plants and staff need to rest. Beauty at the nursery is for all four seasons.
I will continue writing my thoughts during the winter. I enjoy it too much to not continue. I will also be entering all post into the Nursery Journal so if you want to find an earlier post go to the Resource tab. Stay warm this winter.
